Overall Integrative Narrative
I thought a lot about what my major would be and I couldn’t make up my mind for a long time. But I thought about what was important to me and what I felt really passionate about and I chose Spanish. In the back of my mind I had always known that speaking two languages had shaped who I was and it helped me a lot throughout school and in the job field. When people look at me they automatically assume I don’t speak Spanish because I don't "look Mexican" but that’s because they don’t know that it’s my first language.
With the courses that are required I have enhanced my Spanish writing and speaking skills. My grammar has improved greatly and I have even been able to explain it to others that don't understand it. My speaking skills have also improved a lot, in almost all of my classes I have had to do a few presentations so my fear of public speaking is almost gone. I have a lot of fluidity when speaking in Spanish and I am able to express my thoughts in a clear way.
Studying Spanish at CSUMB has taught me so much, from the origins of the language to the ways it varies from country to country. Throughout my journey here I have set goals and I now have a plan as to what I want to do when I graduate. My goal is to become a bilingual teacher at an elementary school and educate the younger generations about the importance of being bilingual. To me being bilingual is more than knowing languages, it’s not just a way of communication but it’s a bridge to different cultures and lifestyles.
